On 8 Feb - 12 Feb the HRD Antwerp Education department had the privilege of organizing a one week special course for ALROSA, one of the leading companies in the diamond industry.
This course provided a broad understanding of the various steps involved in transforming a rough diamond into a polished one. Starting from the moment the stone leaves the mining facility until it’s ready to be mounted into a jewel.
The course also provided hands-on training whereby participants were provided with a ROM (Run Of Mine) in order to sort out the different qualities of small stones, e.g. sawables and makeables, which then had to be divided into several subcategories.
Participants also received an introduction into diamond grading by explaining the 4 C’s (Colour, Cut, Clarity, and Carat) while practising their skills using a diamond microscope and loupe X10.
To complete the training, the AlROSA delegation visited the Antwerpsche Diamantkring, one of the four diamond bourses in Antwerp, and a diamond polishing factory, HRD Antwerp reported.
