A man who named the biggest diamond discovery in the country says he was guided by God in naming the gemstone.
Speaking at a ceremony to award him his prize of P25 000 at Phakalane Gold Estate recently, Mr Thembeni Moitlhobogi, who hails from Mmadikola in the Boteti region, where the diamond was also discovered in the Karowe Diamond Mine, said it was a blessing for his suggested name for having emerged the winner among thousands of entries.
He, however, said it was not an easy task for him for having arrived at the name Lesedi La Rona, noting that he became aware of this competition through his wife who also participated in the competition.
Mr Moitlhobogi, who was accompanied by his wife, Mmadikola kgosi and other tribal elders, said he would forever remain indebted to Lucara Diamond Company for having afforded him the chance to name one of the biggest diamond discoveries ever made in the last century.
Meanwhile, Lucara chief operations officer, Mr Paul Day said the discovery of the 1 111 carat diamond has created much enthusiasm throughout the world and has definitely put Botswana on the international radar.
He further noted that the fact that the diamond has been given a Setswana name is a true identity of where the diamond originates, noting that since the discovery of this gem, it has been making international news headlines.
He, however, said it was not easy to select the winning name among the 11 000 entries which were received. Mr Day nevertheless thanked those who participated in the name competition and the selection panel.
